The construction of the National Key Laboratory of “Urban Water Resource and Environment” started in 2007, and passed the acceptance inspection on January 30th, 2010. Located in northeast China and relying on the construction of related discipline group in HIT, the Laboratory owns three national key disciplines in environmental engineering, municipal engineering, and fluid mechanics, the national key training disciplines of environmental science, and 8 doctoral programs including urban water resource engineering, environmental microbiology, applied chemistry, chemical technology and engineering etc. There are 57 staff members working for the laboratory, including 4 academicians in the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 37 professors, 14 associate professors, and 6 lab technicians. With most members aged from 40 to 50, with reasonable structure and sustainable creativity, an academic research team, which is domestically and internationally influential and full of vigor, was formed. The Laboratory covers an area of 8,000m2 and possesses fixed assets of about 39 million yuan. The director of the Laboratory is Professor Ren Qinan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Researcher Qu Jiuhui, also an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, works as the director of the Academic Committee.

After three years of construction and development, the Laboratory has established complete culture and connotation, formed the cultural atmosphere of “searching for the truth behind everything; keeping unity between theory and practice; and embracing different ideas”, created the research atmosphere that is good for attracting high-level professionals, forming innovative teams of high quality and high level, and cultivating creative talents.

The Laboratory currently covers an area of more than 8,000m2 and possesses fixed assets of about 39 million yuan, which mainly include the analysis and test platform for physical and chemical parameters, the basic research platform for microbiology and molecular biology, and the basic research platform for numeral simulation and large-scale computation.

The analysis and test platform for physical and chemical parameters consists of large instruments for component and concentration analysis including the gas chromatography - mass spectrometry, the liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry, the inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer, the gas chromatography, the liquid chromatography, the multi-chromatography system, the ion chromatography, the atomic absorption spectrometer, and the total organic carbon/total nitrogen analyzer, and instruments for physical-chemical and textural analysis including the electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, the electrochemical analyzer, the Zeta potential analyzer, the size distribution and particle counter, the atomic force microscopy, the Brunauer-Emmet0Teller specific surface area and porosimetry system, the Fourier transform-infra red spectroscopy, the fluorescence spectroscopy, the stopped-flow module, and the thermal analysis system etc. At the same time, many online apparatus were also equipped, such as the online monitoring apparatus for residual chlorine, ammonia nitrogen, dissolved oxygen, total manganese, and ozone etc. These apparatus are ready to join the simulation systems and to provide various analyzing means for scientific research.
